Elizabeth Bartlett Wadsworth silhouette, Portland, ca. 1810

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Elizabeth Bartlett Wadsworth (1753-1825) was the wife of Peleg Wadsworth. The couple built the Wadsworth-Longfellow House on Congress Street (then Back Street) in Portland in 1785-1786.

She and Peleg had 11 children, three girls and eight boys. Her nickname was “Betsey” and she was a direct descendent of John and Pricilla Alden, who were among the Pilgrims who sailed on the Mayflower; her grandson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, later wrote a famous poem about his Pilgrim ancestors.

The silhouette of Elizabeth Wadsworth is taken from a lantern slide.
