Description
This is a copy of a map Portland Assistant City Engineer William S. Edwards made to illustrate the layout of the city before the British bombardment in 1775, when much of the town was destroyed and nearly all the citizens fled.
William Goold of Windham, a historian who was active in the Maine Historical Society, asked Edwards to draw the map. Goold's family presented it to Maine Historical Society
