Description
Walter Goodwin Davis, Jr. was born in Portland in 1885. After graduating from Yale University and Harvard School of Law, he practiced law in New York City for a short time.
When living in New York, Davis enlisted in the US Army in 1917 during World War I. After the war, he served as an Assistant Military Attaché in Switzerland. In this role, Capt. Davis toured and reported on the conditions of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. He also advised President Wilson at the American Peace Conference in 1919. He returned to Maine in 1920, where he lived for the remainder of his life.
Davis was an avid genealogist. A prolific writer, he published many volumes and articles on different family histories. He was a long standing member of the Maine Historical Society and New England Historic Genealogical Society. Davis served as Maine Historical Society president from 1930-1954, during which time he worked to build the Society's genealogy collections. He died in 1966.
This commissioned portrait was painted by American realist Eugene E. Speicher, a renowned portrait painter from New York.
