Description
John Anderson of Portland (1792-1853) graduated from Bowdoin College in 1813, studied law, and spent much of his career in public service.
He was in the state Senate in 1824, a Republican representative to Congress from 1825-1833, mayor of Portland from 1833-1842, U.S. Attorney for the District of Maine from 1833-1837, and collector of customs from 1837-1841.
