Description
Elizabeth Oakes Smith, a Maine native and noted lecturer and writer, wrote a four-part account of her August 1849 trip to Katahdin. She is reportedly the first woman to climb the mountain.
The account appeared in the Portland Daily Advertiser on September 12, September 15, September 26, and October 8, 1849. Each installment was on page 2 of the newspaper.
