Description
American Can Company facilities in Lubec. The stack identifies the boiler house in foreground. The factory whistle rises on a pipe at the left of the stack. Note the wooden coal bin to the rear, built over the water. The horizontal sign on front of the two-story building reads “American Can Co. Office.” Rackwork appears to carry a water pipe above Commercial Street to the boiler house; a water tank existed high on the bluff rising at the extreme left. This canning plant opened in 1908, fabricating cans for the fish packing industry in the region. At its peak (and much enlarged) American turned out 350 million cans a year...almost a million a day. The plant shut down in 1972.
