Description
This form noted the election of Henry Worcester Swanton to the position of First Lieutenant in the Volunteer Company of Infantry of State Guards of the Maine State Militia in July of 1863 for six months.
The Civil War muster roll of Bath showed that Henry W. Swanton "got a Substitute for 3 years," namely Charles D. Wallace. This was not an uncommon option for Bath men, but the historian of Bath, Henry Owen, estimated that more than 800 men from the city served the Union during the Civil War.
Among those were Thomas Worcester Hyde, the founder of Bath Iron Works, who had asked his late father's business partner, also Henry's father, John Bosworth Swanton, to petition the governor for Thomas to be granted authorization to form a company for a Maine regiment.
