Description
This modern image of the Sagadahoc County Courthouse shows the unchanged facade of the 1868-69 structure as it looks eastward to the Kennebec River and the central business district. Now backed by a 1986 addition, the original structure has largely maintained its historic front facade as designed by Bath native Francis H. Fassett. The belfry was closed in sometime in the twentieth century and the bell removed. The projecting front entrance bay and its grand staircase was meant to be a statement, indicating the political power of the new county, and was echoed inside by an interior grand staircase and a Courtroom fitted with black walnut detailing.
