Description
In 1605, a cross was left on the shore of the Georges River in present-day Thomaston by Captain George Waymouth, English navigator and explorer. Although no permanent settlement was established at that time, the cross commemorates the arrival of an early European navigator and explorer on the river bank at this location.
This sign, Thomaston - 1605, greets Route One travelers as they enter the village from both the west and east, and marks the discovery date of the geographical area. The ship symbolilzes Thomaston's longlasting involvement with the shipbuilding industry from its infancy to present day.
The Town of Thomaston was incorporated in 1777.
