Description
Oliver Matthews, one of many blacksmiths who operated in Thomaston during the 1850s. Oliver Mathews was an early blacksmith, who went at age 16 to help apply iron to the Monitor or the Merrimac, according to E. Roger Morse of Thomaston. He worked in a blacksmith shop located at the foot of Wadsworth Street, just before crossing the bridge toward Cushing. The blacksmith building was later moved to a location near the Morse Boatbuilding Company, where he remained with his trade until his death.
He married Mary Carle December 26, 1871 and lived in the house built by his father, also a blacksmith, at 383 West Main Street.
