Description
In 1803 many new highways were laid out. The county road was straightened, leaving a small portion of land between the newly laid out road and an earlier curving section. William Keith, owner of the land, fenced and planted it with trees, and the area is known as the Thomaston Mall. It formerly was the site of his father's tannery.
In the middle of the 19th century, many influential businessmen and ship captains selected this neighborhood in which to build their stately homes.
