Description
In 1854 the Prison Warden Bennett requested and received a company of citizens, organized to manage a new and powerful fire engine at the Upper Corner. Called the State of Maine, No. 3, E. B. Hinkley was its first commander. A fire house containing a hall was built in front of the prison walls, east of the Warden's house.
Rival feelings from those at the Lower Corner brought about the purchase of an engine called Eureka, No. 4, and a firehouse was built on Starr Street.
