Description
This view of Joppa looking north toward Temple Street shows the aftermath of the Flood of 1870. It was one of the major floods in Hallowell and swept out the remains of the Hallowell-Chelsea bridge.
Other major floods are the Flood of 1896, 1936 and 1987.
Joppa was the area between Temple Street and Vaughan Stream and at the time of the Flood of 1870 included commercial establishments and residences. Joppa deteriorated over the years and the State of Maine purchased and demolished many riverside residences in the 1960s.
