Description
The photograph shows Beemans Corner which is located at the corner of Central and Water Streets in downtown Hallowell.
The back of the photo notes: "Buildings to left and rear of middle building- Charles Smith Stable- Kept horses there and blacksmith shop..."
The book "Around Hallowell" compiled by Bob Briggs in 1996 notes: "Perhaps a Labor Day celebration c. 1899. Labor Day celebrations in Hallowell at the turn of the century were no small matter. A newspaper account reports the festivities included floats, parades and sporting events held at the Muster Field. The evening was capped off by a grand ball held at City Hall with music furnished by a live orchestra."
