Description
A horse-drawn Centennial Celebration float and small automobile apparently prepared to move uphill on School Street from the triangular corner with Main Street. Note spectators leaning against and sitting on the fence beyond the horses.
The automobile bears a 1911 license plate 9050 MAINE. Between 1905 and 1911 Maine issued plates with white characters on a red ground.
The arched sign beyond reads, “WE REPRESENT THIS NATION.” Crudely hand lettered, two of the Ns are backwards. The houses in the background are on Main Street, the middle one owned by Hattie Stuart. According to Peggy Bailey, “my great-great grandfather, Oliver Reynolds, contracted to have it built for his daughter Hattie Thayer, widow of Daniel Thayer. She lived there until after my maternal grandmother married Robert McBride. They then sold the house to my father’s parent’s, and it was in the family until middle 60’s.”
