Description
A view of the Maine Central train wreck in Bangor on August 9, 1871. The inquest of the Maine Central Railroad concluded that, although the eighteen-year-old bridge had been inspected earlier that year, it was severely rotted. The train, trying to make up time, waited until it reached the bridge to apply the brake; this caused a sudden jolt that stressed the timbers.
