Cartoon and verse by James Montgomery Flagg decrying the condition of the road between Biddeford and Biddeford Pool.
IN A CLASS BY ITSELF
BY
JAMES MONTGOMERY FLAGG
Some years ago I threw a fit
Trying to shake ‘em up a bit
About that Accident—to wit:
The road to Biddeford Pool!
The longest nine miles known to fame,
Calamity is its maiden name;
Knocking the dead is a bloody shame—
Damn the road to Biddeford Pool!
Last June I drove me to the Coast
Where sunkist Californians boast—
To find a rottener road to roast—
Than the road to Biddeford Pool!
From St. Louis on to Hollywood
The roads are anything but good,
Still they were lovely to what I stood
On the road to Biddeford Pool!
The canyons, deserts I drove through,
With rocky trails and mud like glue—
None of them were a marker to
The road to Biddeford Pool!
Through Rocky Mountains—Holy Cats!—
Dusty chuck-holes—alkali flats—
None of them slung such a kick in the slats
As the road to Biddeford Pool!
Through to the Coast and all the way back—
Wheel spokes busted—springs went slack!
But say! If you’re trying your spine to CRACK!
Try the road to Biddeford Pool!
What works one way is a darned poor rule—
There’s only ONE road on God’s Footstool
That’s worse that the one to Biddeford Pool—
THAT’S THE ROAD FROM THE POOL TO BIDDEFORD!
