Shaarey Tphiloh High Holy Days ticket, Portland, 1973

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Because the synagogue on Noyes Street in Portland was packed during the High Holy Days, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Shaarey Tphiloh sold tickets to the services.

So many people attended that seats extended back into the synagogue's social hall.

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish new year or anniversary of the creation of the world. Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement. The ten days that include the two holidays are a time of repentance and atonement.
