Description
The Peru Center Ferry was owned and operated by Merrill Knight and his family, the first settlers in Peru. The ferry was located on the Androscoggin River, just below their house in what became Peru Center. Pictured is the ferry landing on the Peru side of the river. The cables that guided the ferry can be clearly seen. Aboard the ferry is a surrey with the fringe on top hitched to a horse. A lady with a wide-brimmed hat and a shirt with puffy sleeves is seated, while the gentleman, in a top hat, stands near the horse's head to keep him calm.
