DUPLICATE OF 81564 Charles K. Savage, at Asticou Azalea Garden, ca. 1965

Description

This photo of Charles K. Savage (1903-1979) has been dated at either 1955 or 1965. The first dating puts Savage in Bar Harbor at the Reef Point estate of Beatrix Farrand ca 1955, prior to the dismantling of the gardens there. The second dating puts Savage at the Asticou Azalea Garden which he created in Northeast Harbor ca 1965. What is for sure is that the azaleas pictured behind Savage are of the "veseyi" species that originated at Reef Point and then were transplanted in 1957 to the newly emerging Asticou Azalea Garden. Savage's clothing is typical of what he wore through the years in question and not necessarily dated to the year of the photo. Savage is seen here with a camera which was common to both periods of time in his life. Savage was the owner and manager of the Asticou Inn; manager of the Jordan Pond House; creator of the Asticou Azalea and Thuya Gardens; and community leader in Northeast Harbor.
