Description
On March 1, 1832, Reuben Rideout Jr. of Cumberland travelled to Harpswell to visit David Webber of Cumberland, son of Richard Webber, who in June 1830 was indentured to David Webber of Harpswell, brother to Richard Webber. Rideout billed the town $2.50 for making the journey, and an additional $1.17 for the pair of shoes he purchased for young David Webber. Under Maine law, the Cumberland Overseers of the Poor were required to "inquire into the usage of children already legally bound out," and to "defend them from injuries." It may be that Rideout's visit and findings resulted in concern for young David's situation, since his indenture was soon vacated. On June 25, 1832, David Webber of Cumberland was indentured a second time, to another uncle, James Hamilton of Cumberland. A previous indenture, in 1830, placed Isaac Webber, son of Richard Webber and brother of David Webber, with James Hamilton.
Rueben Rideout Jr. signed the document to acknowledge his receipt of $3.67 reimbursing him for expenditures for the trip.
