Description
Veteran Walter G. Morrill (1840-1935), who served as a colonel in the Civil War, was presented a gold medal of honor in 1893, delivered via the mail. The inscription reads: "The Congress to Colonel Walter G. Morrill, Twentieth Maine Infantry, for gallantry at Rappahannock Station, Va., November 7, 1863."
Leonard Close of the Medal of Honor Historical Society felt that Colonel Morrill, who is buried in the Village Cemetery in Pittsfield, deserved more recognition. Close facilitated the installation of a white stone monument inscribed with the Medal of Honor at Morill's grave, and on September 5, 1992, a ceremony was held with Morrill's grandniece, Vivienne Page, and her daughter Sandy present. Members of the American Legion and re-enactors of 20th Maine regiment also conducted a ceremony to honor Colonel Morrill for his bravery during the dedication.
