Contributed by Pittsfield Historical Society

Description

A committee of representatives from the GAR Stephen Davis Post #11, the Woman's Relief Corps #16 and local citizens raised funds and selected, from numerous designs, the one submitted by C.E. Tayntor Granite Works of New York & Hallowell.

The winning design submission is a stylized painting of a Civil War soldier at parade rest, atop a granite base.

The monument was unveiled and dedicated concurrently with the Pittsfield Public Library on May 28, 1904, during a special Memorial Day observance.
