Description
Deacon Benjamin Weston settled in 1786 along the Kennebec River in Madison. Constructed in 1817, on a thousand acres facing the river, the homestead remained in the family for over 225 years.
The 14 room, Federal-style house has 8 fireplaces; two for 'winter cooking' on cranes and kettles; an ell, with 'summer kitchen', buttery, cast iron stove, on the east elevation; a relocated school house, known as 'Addie's Kitchen' with cookstove and tank, attached on the north elevation.
Addie Bixby Weston (1850-1919) is pictured in the doorstep of the photograph.
Outbuildings were typical for a rural Maine farm: large barn, for pigs, sheep, cattle, oxen; horse stable, shop, machine shed, granary, corncrib, chicken houses, pump house, icehouse, hay scale, water though, house for hired help.
