Description
A high-neck evening gown made of nylon chiffon, this dress is printed with a paisley motif, and woven with shimmering gold lurex threads. A thick, corded yellow and gold lurex braid edges the neckline and cuffs. The same braid appears along the inset waistband, which is studded with multi-colored glass beads. The dress was likely influenced by Yves St. Laurent’s 1970s-era richly embellished fashions, inspired by an eclectic mix of elements culled from regions worldwide.
The dress is associated with Cecile P. Carver. A graduate of Barnard College, fiber artist Cecile Parker Carver (1925-2009) and her family summered in at Prouts Neck in Scarborough, Maine. In 1984, she donated several significant pieces to Westbrook College from her own wardrobe, and that of her grandmother and namesake, Cécile de Wasilowska. The Westbrook College collection was transferred to Maine Historical Society in 1993.
