"Paul Revere’s Ride" sheet music cover, New York, 1905

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

An American composer, arranger, and sheet music publisher, Edward T. Paull specialized in marches. He arranged Portland poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s "Paul Revere’s Ride" from the 1863 "Tales of a Wayside Inn" publication into a march tune.

Paull was the first publisher to use five-color lithography for his sheet music, greatly boosting sales of the music scores. The cover artwork for "Paul Revere’s Ride" shows a wide-eyed horse with frothing mouth, indicating the haste involved in Revere’s April 18, 1775 ride to alert minutemen in Massachusetts of the approach of the British Army at the beginning of the Revolutionary War.
