Description
Navy Commander George Henry Preble, a native of Portland and career military officer, wrote a plea to President Abraham Lincoln to restore his command.
Lincoln and Secretary of War Gideon Welles had dismissed Preble after the ship he commanded in Mobile Bay in September 1862 failed to stop and apprehend a Confederate ship that ran the blockade Preble was enforcing.
The letter is a copy of the original and is in the papers of Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, also of Portland, who was military governor of Louisiana.
