Description

The American flag with its embellishing gold fringe and a tassel at each corner hung in the hall of the building on Park Street in Pittsfield, owned by the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) members of the Stephen Davis Post #11. The building was demolished in the 1970s as part of an urban renewal project.

O. S. Haskell Camp Sons of the Veterans, Auxiliary #8 owned this flag. They met on the first and third Wednesday of every month. This group was an auxiliary to the post named after Lieutenant Orin Shepley Haskell of the 1st Maine Calvary who survived four years of combat in the Union cavalry regiment that sustained the most casualties in the Civil War. Haskell became a leading citizen in Pittsfield and was the first commander of the Stephen Davis Post #11.
