Description
The gradual decline in Bethel's post-Civil War population resulted in the abandonment of numerous hillside farms.
Although the Bird Hill area--in the southeast corner of the town--retained a relatively open landscape in 1905, the small trees poking through the snow in the foreground foretell the future of this former agricultural district, which is heavily forested as of 2015.
