Description
In this 1781 letter, Theodosia Prevost (1746-1794) writes to Col. Jeremiah Wadsworth (1743-1805), urging the Colonel to visit her in Sharon, Connecticut. Col. Aaron Burr (1756-1836), her frequent correspondent, indicated she should expect a visit from Wadsworth. Theodosia thanks Wadsworth for being a friend to the friendless, and tells of her plan to move to Wethersfield, CT, near Hartford.
Theodosia Prevost lived briefly in Sharon, CT while her husband, Jacques Marcus Prevost, served the British Army as Lieutenant Colonel of the 60th Regiment of Foot. She had moved from her home in Paramus, NJ due to the threat of seizure of her husband’s property, called "The Hermitage." During this time, several Loyalists from New York had found a safe haven in Sharon, CT. Influential friends among the American Patriots advocated for of Mrs. Prevost, and "The Hermitage" was not seized.
Late in 1781, Lt.-Col. Prevost died in Jamaica. Theodosia Prevost later married Col. Aaron Burr in New Jersey in July of 1782.
