Description
Blanche Friderici (1878–1933), a Brooklyn native, began her career as a stage actress after her eyesight deteriorated, forcing her to give up her original goal of becoming a teacher. She quickly earned roles on stage and later became best known for her performances in A Farewell to Arms (1932) and It Happened One Night (1934), released posthumously.
This photograph was taken for the play The Cherry Pickers, written in 1896 by Joseph Arthur and performed at the B.F. Keith Theater. Located on Congress Street in Portland, the theater operated from 1908 until the 1960s, when it was demolished and replaced with a parking lot.
