Description
Penobscot Indian Nation Tribal member Margaret Shay was shown demonstrating ash basketmaking. The Portland Sunday Telegram featured the family for petitioning Governor Baxter to remove religious curriculum from the schools on Indian Island.
The article related that the Shays were skilled basketmakers who supported themselves and their educational goals through basketmaking in Portland, where they lived at 45 Mayo Street.
Margaret Shay began raising her family in Norwich, Connecticut prior to returning to Indian Island, where the Shays were disturbed by the parochial school and lack of educational choices for their children.
