Description
Nellie (Ellen) Ryan (1875-1922), born in New York City to a sea captain, wore this dress to her marriage to Dr. Arthur F. Abbott of Presque Isle, on 5 March 1898. A pale green fancy weave cotton, the dress is accented with peach (pink) silk and lace. A beaded and net trimmed front panel, collar and cuffs include multi-colored sequence. The full puffed upper sleeve is indicative of late 1890s style. The gigot, or leg of mutton sleeve, once popular in the 1830 and 1840s, made a brief return in the 1890s.
