Description
This rayon voile (sheer rayon) ankle-length evening gown features classic mid-1930s fashion elements including a deep V-neck at the back and front, and a short matching bolero jacket. Abandoning the 1920s straight figure silhouette, this floral print dress illustrates the 1930s “return of femininity” fashion trend. A seamstress cut the gown’s fabric on the bias (on the grain) which created a fluid, form-fitting feminine garment, and fluttering shoulder bolero.
Originally from Waterford, Maine, Anne F. Wilson (1873-1959) graduated from Wellesley College in 1896. An aspiring author, Anne first worked in Boston as a literary editor. She started her social work career with the Settlement Movement, an early 20th century social reform movement where middle-class young women lived and worked in underserved urban areas, teaching educational classes and skills to area youth. Wilson continued her social work career in Salem, Massachusetts during the 1930s.
