Description
Engraving of James Sullivan (1744-1808), from the book "Life of James Sullivan with Selections from his Writings" by Thomas C. Amory, v. 1 Boston: Phillips, Sampson and Company, 1859.
Sullivan was a native of Berwick, author of "The History of the District of Maine" (1795), and the first president of the Massachusetts Historical Society, which encompassed the District of Maine. He was elected governor of Massachusetts in 1807, but died one year into his term.
