Description
This 1830s dress features a boat neck style, a wide neck running shoulder to shoulder. The sleeves, meant to accentuate a small waist, added fullness to the shoulder. The tightly gathered skirt waist feature, called cartridge pleating, is a testament to the dressmaker’s skill at incorporating such a wide width of fabric into such a small circumference. The hand embroidery, known as whitework, is a technique where the embroidery thread and background fabric are one color.
