Description
Civil rights activists in Maine brought four campaigns voters from 1995 to 2003 to build up non-discrimination laws as foundational to equality in marriage. Opponents said Question 1 and its confusing language was meant to mask discriminatory intent against the civil rights of LGBTQ people, and confuse voters.
In 1995, Question 1 sought to limit the civil-rights umbrella to exclude LGBTQ+ people, and appeared on the November 7, 1995 ballot. The measure sought to limit the protected classifications in future state and local laws to race, color, sex, physical or mental disability, religion, age, ancestry, national origin, familial status and marriage status. It would have repealed existing laws that expanded those classifications. The measure was defeated.
