Description
The Upper Falls Dam at Saccarappa was created by damming the Presumpscot River. The dams once furnished hydraulic power to Westbrook's mills, including S.D. Warren. The dam was bisected by an island. In 2019, both eastern and western spillwalls of the Upper Falls Dam were demolished, which restored the natural flow of the Presumspcot and allowed for upstream passage of fish.
This photograph was included in an album owned by Portland civil engineer William S. Edwards. Written below the image is, “Upper Falls, Saccarappa. June 11, 1887”
