Description
Englishman John L. Hatton composed music set to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem, "The Rainy Day." Longfellow wrote this poem in 1841 while visiting his childhood home in Portland, the Wadsworth-Longfellow House. Looking onto the rainy Longfellow Garden, he noted the melancholy and dreariness of the rain, and that, “Into each life, some rain must fall.”
Hatton worked in London and Vienna as a composer, music director, and singer. At least twenty-seven other composers set "The Rainy Day" to music, including William R. Dempster in 1847, Amy Marcy Cheeney in 1883, and George Thornton Edwards in 1914.
