Contributed by Maine Seacoast Mission
Description
Eight young ladies sit on the steps of Sealand Church, waiting for Sunday School to begin. Sealand, located on the island's southwest side, became home to a church built by the Maine Seacoast Mission in 1910. A granite quarry operated nearby from 1890 to 1920, alongside a lath mill that closed in 1928. Most residents worked as fishermen or farmers.
Maine Seacoast Mission has been a trusted friend along the Maine coast since 1905. Rooted in a history of compassionate service and mutual trust, the Mission seeks to strengthen coastal and island communities by educating youth, supporting families, and promoting good health.
