Antoine Thibault funeral card, 1964

Description

Father Antoine Thibault (1898-1964) was born to Pierre Thibault and Eugenie Lebel in Auburn. He studied in Quebec and in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was ordained. He served as an assistant in Biddeford before receiving appointments as pastor in Sheridan and in Eagle Lake, both in Aroostook County. He then served in Rumford from 1953 until his death. His parish, Saint-Jean-Baptiste or St. John the Baptist, was predominantly Franco-American. He was chaplain of the local chapter of the Société l'Assomption, a fraternal and mutual benefit society that appealed particularly to Acadians.

Thibault died at St. Mary's General Hospital in Lewiston. He had suffered a heart attack three days earlier while celebrating Mass in Rumford. The bishop of Portland led the funeral service. His body was laid to rest in the family plot in Lewiston.
