Description
Colonel Ward, possibly Joseph or Samuel Ward, wrote this letter to Captain Henry Sewall of the 12th Massachusetts Regiment on February 4, 1780, from Morristown, New Jersey. The letter responds to news of a fire at West Point that destroyed personal property and military records. Ward expressed regret for the loss and supported Sewall’s request for compensation and replacement clothing, citing his extra service.
Ward also discussed the use of regimental abstracts for mustering troops and mentioned pending updates from Congress regarding muster procedures.
Henry Sewall, born in York, Maine in 1752, served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. After the war, he settled in Hallowell, opened a store at Fort Western in Augusta, and served in the Maine militia as Division Inspector, Brigadier General, and Major General of the 8th Division.
