Bangor Stoneware Company jug, ca. 1890

Contributed by Kings Landing Historical Settlement

Description

This late 19th century ceramic jug made by the Bangor Stoneware Company was most likely used to hold liquids such as molasses, vinegar, or whiskey.

The Bangor Stoneware Company operated in Bangor, Maine, between 1880 and 1917. In The City of Bangor, The Industries, Resources, Attractions and Business Life of Bangor and Its Environs (1899) the Bangor Stoneware Co. advertisement stated "Manufacturers of Stone and Fancy Pressed Ware of every description, and dealers in Earthen, Rockingham, Yellow & White Ware, Patten Street, Bangor."

The Bangor Stoneware Company was founded by Andrew Persson, a native of Sweden who learned the potter's trade in that country. After coming to America in 1868 he became part owner in the Gardiner Stoneware Co. but in 1880, he moved to Bangor and built a large pottery plant where he was principle owner and sole proprietor until his death in 1913. (The Pottery, Glass & Brass Salesman, July 24, 1913).
