Description

In 1991, Bangor Aroostook Railroad celebrated the 100th anniversary of it's founding. Part of the celebrations were numerous passenger train excursions along various sections of the line. On July 20th, 1991, this excursion left Presque Isle for a trip out to Squa Pan and back. Note the celebratory American Flag flying from the cab.

Engine 502 is a General Motors Electro-motive Division (EMD) F-3 repainted for the centenial celebrations in its original delivery paint scheme. In the 1940's, when diesel engines first started to make their appearance on the nations railways, it was thought that while diesels were cleaner and easier to maintain, they would never have the power to pull heavy freight trains. The F3 proved this assumption wrong and by 1960, virtually all of the nations trains were pulled by diesel engines.
