The U.S.S. Michigan (II) was built primarily as a cargo ship with limited passenger accommodation and commenced her first London to New York voyage on November 15, 1891. This ship was transferred to the National Line in 1896, the year in which it was acquired by the Atlantic Transport Line, and started her first London to New York voyage this line on March 22, 1896.
She commenced her last sailing on this route on June 27, 1898, for she and her sister were requisitioned by the U. S. Government. The Michigan was acquired on July 14 at a cost of $660,000 for use as a transport and renamed Kilpatrick. Her capacity was 40 officers, 800 men and 800 horses. She also had refrigerated capacity for shipping 1,000 pounds of meat. As with other transports, she was rebuilt in about 1900 with two tall masts replacing her original four.
