Description
Lucy Belcher opened a school in Farmington for girls named The Willows in 1872. Her father, Hannibal Belcher, built a ‘commodious building’ for Lucy and she opened with nearly 60 students. The educational focus was music, drawing, painting and needlework, but science, English, and math were included for the well-rounded young ladies. Lucy’s interest in the school waned after two years and the school closed. The building itself “proved to be a white elephant”. It was converted to a hotel, which was never very prosperous. After some years of abandonment, it was used for a dormitory for Normal School students during the 1920’s and 1930’s. (Richard Mallet’s book on Farmington Schools p. 35)
