Description
A display of typical Aroostook County potato harvesting equipment at about 1910. On the right is a horse-drawn one row Hoover Paddle Digger with paddles on its wheels. The turning of the wheels on the digger powers the digging mechanism. On the left is a drop axle wagon. Drop axle, or crank axle, construction lowered the freight bed, giving the wagon a lower center of gravity than traditional wagons for more efficient use of the horses' work. The lower freight bed height made it easier to load. Also seen are potato barrels and potato baskets.
