Brig. Gen. Neal Dow, 13th Maine, 1861

Description

Neal Dow (1804-1897) of Portland, a strong advocate of prohibition and author of the "Maine Law" that banned alcohol in the state, enlisted at age 57 as a general and commander of the 13th Maine Infantry.

He served in Louisiana where he was injured in May 1863. While convalescing, he was captured by Confederate forces and sent to a prison in Richmond.
