Description
Mary King Scrimgeour (1849-1930) and Charles E. Scrimgeour (1841-1920), both natives of Ontario, Canada, moved to Lewiston in 1885, when he took a job as master mechanic at the Bates Mill.
The Scrimgeours were prominent residents of Lewiston and Mary King Scrimgeour enjoyed fashion. Among her possessions were pages of Paris fashion announcements, one of which closely resembles this dress.
The dress has a label inside the bodice that reads "Dunton, Robes, Augusta, ME." Mary Scrimgeour also owned a Paris fashion illustration that shows a dress of similar design and detail.
