Description
Dr. Bennet began practicing medicine in Lubec in 1876, treating many families in Lubec and also on Campobello Island including the Franklin D. Roosevelts. In her newspaper column "My Day" in September 1944 on the occasion of Dr. Bennet's death at age 96, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt wrote that "we had few serious illnesses until my husband was stricken with poliomylitis (in August 1921). Dr. Bennet traveled back with us to New York City, and I have never gone to Campobello since, even for a few days, without stopping to see him. I looked upon him as a friend as well as a doctor, and I had the greatest admiration for him."
Judging by the porch trim, the house in the background may be the domicile next door on the downhill side of Dr. Bennet’s Main Street home in Lubec.
